Cultural Trail Construction

A note about upcoming lane restrictions on Indiana Ave between Blackford St. and West St.

Northbound Lane Restriction - On or after January 3, 2023 Indiana Ave between Blackford and West St. transitions to be one way south/east bound.

The north bound lane will be closed to traffic for approximately 9-10 months.

This closure, in coordination with the Department of Public Works, the Madam Walker Legacy Center and IUPUI,  is meant to create a safer work zone for construction crews.

Northbound Detour - A detour for northbound Indiana Ave vehicles is available by turning south on West St. from Indiana Ave then turning west on Michigan St. (from West St.) and turning north on Blackford St. (from Michigan St.) which will bring vehicles to Indiana Ave where they can turn north to continue northbound on Indiana Ave.  There will be detour signage in place to direct vehicles through the detour.

Pedestrian Access -  There will still be pedestrian access along this section of Indiana Ave including pedestrian access to the main entrance to the Madam Walker Legacy Center.  A map of the pedestrian access is included below.  Pedestrian access will have signage for the duration of construction.

Temporary Sidewalk and ADA Ramps - A temporary sidewalk with ADA ramps will be added in the area for the safety of those walking and rolling along Indiana Avenue including patrons of the Madam Walker Legacy Center events.

Parking Lot Access - Access will also remain to the parking lots on Indiana Ave (the Urban League parking lot, and IUPUI lots A, B and C) as well as to the rear entrance to Goodwin Plaza Apartments and to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. However the driveway entrance to the Madam Walker Legacy Center employee parking lot will be closed for about 6 months as construction crews work in the area.
