Champions for Indy’s black history and for each other.
As the most intact 19th century neighborhood associated with African-Americans in Indianapolis, we are dedicated to preserving our area’s history through storytelling, conservation, and civic involvement. We tell the story of those who came before us.
Ransom Place Neighborhood Association brings together residents and neighborhood advocates to celebrate Indianapolis’s rich black history and the legacy of Indiana Avenue. It exists to promote positive change and improvement in the neighborhood, and encourage renovation, restoration, and new construction appropriate to the fabric of the existing buildings.
In the 1830s this area just northwest of the Circle became the neighborhood for Indy’s black community to reside, and many of its homes remain intact. The neighborhood later was named for Freeman Ransom, a prominent black lawyer who managed the legal affairs of Madam CJ Walker and her enterprises.
